Worshipful Company of Arbitrators / Team Up Careers Day at Stephenson Harwood

The Company was delighted to collaborate with Team Up in a careers day for Secondary School pupils on 8 February 2018. This was our first collaboration with Team Up (https://teamup.org.uk/); we hope it will be a model for future events.

The event was attended by twenty pupils from St Mary's Church of England High School, Cheshunt, all from lower income backgrounds. All are receiving after-school tuition in either Maths or English from Team Up tutors, to help them to achieve at least the equivalent of a C grade. There were three objectives:

1) Encouraging pupils to do well in their education
2) Boosting their confidence
3) Helping them to consider their future career aspirations

The day was extremely well run by Joanna Picketts of Team Up and we were very pleased that the new Chief Executive, Sean McFadden, was able to take part. Our speakers engaged the pupils in a lively mix of talks, role play and group discussion. Among other activities, they were able to take part in mock cross-examination of a witness, and discuss the legal aspects of constructing a bridge and a collision between two ships at sea. They were also taken on a tour of the offices of our generous hosts, Stephenson Harwood LLP.

Among the feedback were the following comments:

"The lawyers were inspirational. They seemed very motivational, making it seem like a good job."

"It opened my eyes to other careers such as law, arbitration and being a barrister and it has given me a better understanding of what being a solicitor is.""

Special thanks are due to our speakers, Stephen Boyd, David Aikman, David Canning and Charles Brown, and to Louis Flannery, who arranged the venue.
