Little Ilford School, Newham E12 6JB

Little Ilford School had a visit from Paul Cookson, a poet, performer and ukulele player! His poetry performances showcase a wide variety of poetry and styles but do concentrate on fun, humour and audience participation performance. The school wanted to make this a transition event for the new Year 7 plus Year 6 from all their feeder primary schools. The aim was to engage the children in reading for pleasure and at the same time support their transition to the school. Paul delivered 2 performances and 2 workshops to mixed audiences of Year 7 from Little Ilford and Year 6 from 4 feeder primary schools. Over the course of the day Paul worked with 650 children from 5 schools. Follow up work was done with the Year 7 pupils where they looked at books and wrote their responses in their Reading Journals.

Feedback from the school:

"It was an amazing experience for our children to watch Paul Cookson recite his poetry. The pupils really enjoyed the way her performed his poetry – the humour and excitement added to the fun. As a result, our pupils have gained a lot more appreciation for poetry and bought a lot of books to take home and read. It also helped with their own poetry recital at school as it sparked something within them and they felt a lot more enthusiastic about it. Thank You."
