Lord Mayor's Financial Literacy Initiative
Wednesday 14 December 2011

14th December 2011 was the final day of a project that involved leading a group of Year 5 (ie 9 years old) schoolchildren through the basics of “Enterprise” including finance and banking, then designing and making greeting cards to sell (for charity) in the school playground.  Each child had to take on one of the roles of M/D, Financial Officer, Product Designer, Marketing Advisor etc and work together as a group in competition (quite intense !) with the other groups.  The project is spread out over several months, each stage taking 2-3 hours. The Master’s group (all boys, five of South Asian origins and one Vietnamese) did well in selling all their cards (with origami as an extra), demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of the Del Trotter approach to salesmanship.

The Master and Senior Warden were accompanied by Past Master Rushton, Assistant Simon Underwood and Liveryman David Steward and other non-Livery volunteers.

On this last day, the groups had to prepare and then deliver a presentation, possibly a frightening prospect even for older children but not for these ones !  The Master’s group did well but David Steward’s group won the top prize.  The Master noted some healthy competition going on between the volunteers, most obviously between Messrs Davies and Rushton.

It is intended that the Company’s involvement with schools expands since there is much that we can do to help these young children.
